ROUND IRELAND YACHT RACE – 2026
NOTICE TO COMPETITORS
Hazard Reporting
Irish waters are home to many large species of megafauna, including the Humpback, Fin, Minke Whale, it is also the season for Basking sharks which have arrived to our coasts in large numbers. Collisions with such hazards pose serious risks to crew safety and vessel integrity. A hazard reported by one competitor may prevent a catastrophic collision for another.
As part of the Round Ireland Yacht Race commitment to Sustainability and Safety, and aligned with the World Sailing guidelines for marine megafauna, the Organizing Committee permits communications relating to boat and crew safety, and strongly encourages all competitors to:
1. Maintain a continuous watch for hazards throughout the race.
2. Report all observed hazards using the connected Hazard reporting network, via Whale Alert app, Expedition or Adrena navigation software.
3. Actively monitor the Whale Alert app, Expedition or Adrena for hazard reports submitted by other competitors and mariners.
WHAT TO REPORT
All hazards should be reported promptly, ensuring live information is communicated to the other vessels on the water, and race management. Reportable hazards include, but are not limited to:
- Any object or un-charted condition the skipper considers representing a meaningful navigation or collision risk.
- Marine megafauna – whales, large dolphins, basking sharks, or similar marine life that present a danger to navigation.

REPORTING TOOLS
- Whale Alert App: Whale Alert App is the primary free tool for both hazard reporting and monitoring marine mammal sightings. Download the Whale Alert app (iOS or Android; see whalealert.org), register your vessel before departure, and ensure notifications are enabled. Report any sighting immediately, including position, species (if known), number of animals, and direction of travel. Monitor the app throughout the race for reports from other vessels.
